The season of pumpkin spice lattes over and the dawn of peppermint mochas is upon us. But, living in the U.K. this holiday season, I have found a new winter drink to call my fave.
I was in a rush on the way to school. Alight with the flight or fight response of being late, I had to figure out if I was:
A) going to Prêt à Manger,
B) running into Caffè Nero or
C) if I would just go without for the next two and a half hours.
I made an abrupt turn into Nero. If I could get in and out in five minutes, that would be golden.
I knew that the coffee chain had its own line-up of “festive” drinks: the clementine latte, the gingerbread latte, the roasted hazelnut latte and salted caramel latte. But a little chalkboard on the counter whispered to me of an elixir more potent than anything I’d ever heard of.
Three words: gingerbread hot chocolate.
Let me explain something to you: not all hot drinks are created equal. To be frank, my (African) American palate has been apparent to me many a day in London.
Yes, sometimes, fish + chips could stand to have more seasoning in the batter. And likewise, there could be a few more pumps of vanilla or hazelnut syrup in this lackluster coffee. Further still, I’ll have a chai latte and it will taste like hot soya milk with a dash of cinnamon. And I’m left thinking, “Wow, y’all’s palates are that delicate, huh?”
With its gingerbread hot chocolate, let me assure you: Caffè Nero is firing on all cylinders.
Caffè Nero’s gingerbread hot chocolate is magic in liquid form. Caffè Nero’s gingerbread hot chocolate is like Christmas in a cup. It’s stockings full of goodies, a crackling hearth and Mariah Carey / Pentatonix / August Burns Red / The Jonas Brothers in the stereo. Caffè Nero’s gingerbread hot chocolate is mistletoe.
But it’s bigger than you, me or Christmas. Caffè Nero’s gingerbread hot chocolate should get an Oscar, and a Tony, and a Grammy and an Emmy. It should win “Album of the Year.” Caffè Nero’s gingerbread hot chocolate should get a BAFTA. Caffè Nero’s gingerbread hot chocolate should get a place in Parliament.
Caffè Nero’s gingerbread hot chocolate can mend broken political systems, balance globalization and deconstruct the white heteropatriarchy. Caffè Nero’s gingerbread hot chocolate can fill your savings account, clear your skin and unbreak your heart.
If you’re going to be the in the U.K. any time soon, you already know what to do.
